Following on from plans discussed at a residents’ meeting earlier in the month, one of the first tasks of the Shannonvale Sewage Flood action group, has been to raise awareness of the scandal in the wider media. With that in mind, Barry O’Mahony put together a brief explainer video for those unfamiliar with the fact that a sewer is leaking gallons of human excrement every day into the only public space in Shannonvale village. In the video, O’Mahony can be seen filling a pint glass with thick black sewage, simply by dipping it into the grass of what should be the village park. Later, while standing on the bridge that spans the adjacent River Argideen (drinking water supply for Clonakilty), and holding the offending sample, he explains that his father once, for the benefit of a newspaper photographer, stood on the very same spot 22 years previously, holding a glass of the same effluent, taken from the same leak.
